No pay-to-play. We do not sell rankings. Contractors earn their place through credentials and customer feedback.
Authentic reviews. Listings show genuine homeowner feedback, not paid placements.
Licensed in your state. Licensing rules differ by state and locality, so we check that listed contractors hold the license their work requires.
EPA-certified for refrigerants. Handling AC and heat pump refrigerants requires EPA Section 608 certification, and we look for it.

US Climate Control: Federal Tax Credits & Sizing Advice

From heavy northern snowfall regions to intense humid summers, American homes require versatile heating and cooling solutions.
Federal · Ended
Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C)
Heat pumps: up to $2,000 a year. Furnaces and central air conditioners: up to $600 per item. It applies only to equipment placed in service before December 31, 2025, so it no longer covers new purchases.
Michigan · Active, Detroit area paused
Michigan Home Energy Rebates (MiHER)
HEAR rebates for households at or below 150% of area median income cover heat pumps and electric equipment. HOMES rebates cover whole-home heating and cooling upgrades, based on modeled energy savings. Work is done through a prequalified contractor. The Detroit district is temporarily paused.
North Dakota · Listed, confirm status
North Dakota HEAR Rebates
Ducted heat pumps and ductless mini-splits: up to $8,000 each. Households below 80% of area median income receive 100% of costs, up to $14,000. Households from 80% to 150% receive 50%, up to $14,000. Furnaces and central AC are not listed.
Maine · Limited Launch
Maine Home Energy Rebates (HEAR)
Federal HEAR rebates are active ONLY for affordable multifamily and mobile home projects. Single-family home status is unconfirmed. Check Efficiency Maine for current state rebate details.
Please note: Program status changes often. Each card reflects official state and IRS pages checked on 9 October 2026. Where a program’s status is not confirmed, the card says so. New federal rules published 1 June 2026 may change HEAR and HOMES details. Confirm current terms with the program before you buy, and get approval before work starts.

What is the best heating system for cold US winters?

In northern and mountain states, a high-efficiency gas furnace or a cold-climate heat pump suits most homes, and many homeowners pair the two as a dual-fuel system. A furnace with a variable-speed blower keeps rooms evenly warm, while a heat pump lowers running costs in milder weather. The right choice depends on your fuel prices, climate, and ductwork.

Do heat pumps work in extreme cold?

Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep producing heat well below freezing, and many are rated to operate around −13°F or lower. Output drops as temperatures fall, so many homes keep a furnace as backup. Check the manufacturer’s low-temperature rating, not just the headline efficiency number.

How much does furnace installation cost in the US?

Furnace installation cost depends on your state and city, home size, the furnace’s efficiency, ductwork condition, and local labor rates, so there is no single national price. Open your state or city page for local pricing, or use our calculators to estimate before you ask for quotes.

Do HVAC contractors need a license?

Licensing rules vary by state, and some are set at the city or county level. Anyone who handles refrigerants must also hold EPA Section 608 certification. Always ask to see a contractor’s current license and insurance before work starts.

How do I find emergency furnace repair near me?

Open your state or city page from the lists on this page to reach your local page. If your heat goes out in winter, call a licensed local technician right away, because a frozen house can damage pipes within hours.

Are there rebates or tax credits for a new furnace or heat pump?

The federal 25C tax credit ended for equipment placed in service after December 31, 2025. Some state programs are open now, such as Michigan’s MiHER for households at or below 150% of area median income. Minnesota’s HEAR program has not launched yet. Check your state’s program before you buy, and confirm the current terms.
