Repair or Replace? The AC Decision Guide

Use the “5,000 Rule” as a quick test: multiply your AC’s age (in years) by the repair cost (in dollars). If the result exceeds $5,000, replacement is generally the smarter financial choice.

Factors That Affect AC Repair Cost in Canada

📍 City & Labour Rate
HVAC labour rates in Toronto and Vancouver are $90–$130/hr vs. $70–$100/hr in smaller Canadian cities. The same repair can cost 20–30% more in major metros.
📅 Season & Urgency
Emergency summer repairs cost more — technicians often charge 1.5–2× the normal rate for weekend or after-hours service calls during peak heat season.
🏷️ Brand & Part Availability
Parts for older or discontinued AC brands can be harder to find and cost more. Premium brands often have readily available parts and may be covered under extended warranty.
🔄 System Age
Older systems (12+ years) often have degraded components that fail together. One repair may uncover additional problems, increasing total repair cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is AC refrigerant recharging so expensive?

Refrigerant (R-410A, R-22, or R-32) can only be legally purchased and handled by certified HVAC technicians in Canada (F-Gas certification). The refrigerant itself costs $50–$100/lb, and a typical recharge uses 2–5 lbs. If your AC needs refrigerant more than once, there’s a leak — and finding and fixing the leak adds to the cost. R-22 (older systems) has been phased out and is especially expensive.
