Ontario HVAC Cost Overview (2026): Furnace Price Estimates

These are typical installed ranges in CAD for a detached home with existing ductwork, based on 2026 pricing from Burlington and Hamilton area HVAC companies. Larger homes, ductwork changes, premium equipment and gas or venting work cost more. They are guides, not quotes.

Major repairs: heat exchanger, control board, compressor and refrigerant-leak repairs vary by model. Ask for a written quote before any work begins. For heat pumps and hybrid systems, use our heat pump cost calculator.
Why costs vary in Ontario: Toronto and the GTA usually price higher because of labour and permit costs. London, Kitchener-Waterloo and Kingston are often a little lower, though peak-season demand (October to January) raises labour rates everywhere. Older or undersized ductwork and gas or venting changes add cost in any city.

Climate & What Works Best in Ontario

Ontario winters are long and cold, and hot, humid summers make cooling matter too. A gas furnace is the most common system, and many newer subdivisions still run the builder-installed unit, often 15 to 20 years old before repairs pile up.
Winter heating
Gas furnace
The most common system across Ontario. Consider replacing a builder-grade unit once repairs add up.
Cold-climate heat pump
Built to keep heating in deep cold. Ask the installer to confirm capacity at your design temperature.
Hybrid (dual-fuel)
Heat pump in mild weather, gas furnace in deep cold. Ask for itemized quotes.
Summer cooling
Central AC or ductless
A correctly sized unit cools better and avoids short cycling.
Ask for a load calculation before choosing equipment. Sizing depends on insulation, windows and layout, not just square footage.

Ontario HVAC Questions

What HVAC services are available in Ontario?

Ontario homeowners can find furnace installation, replacement, repair and maintenance, heat pump and ductless installation, hybrid systems, and central or ductless air conditioning installation, repair and tune-ups. Gas work on furnaces must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor.

How much does a new gas furnace cost in Ontario?

Replacing a gas furnace in Ontario typically costs about $3,500 to $6,500 installed in 2026 for a detached home with existing ductwork, based on Burlington and Hamilton area pricing. Larger homes, ductwork changes, premium models and gas or venting work can cost more, and Toronto and the GTA usually price higher.

Is the Enbridge Home Renovation Savings Program still available?

Yes, as of October 2026 the program is still running. It is reported to run through the end of November 2026, but the official Save on Energy page shows no end date and the terms allow changes, so check the official site and apply before you book work.

How much is the Ontario heat pump rebate?

The official program lists up to $7,500 for a cold-climate air-source heat pump and up to $12,000 for a ground-source heat pump. The amount depends on the system size and how your home is heated, and natural-gas homes usually receive less than homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood.

How do I check that a contractor is TSSA-registered?

Ask for the company’s TSSA authorization number and check it with the Find a Registered Fuels Contractor tool on tssa.org, or call TSSA at 1-877-682-8772. Confirm the company name matches and ask who will do the gas connection and venting.

Does a heat pump installation need a TSSA-registered contractor?

TSSA regulates fuel-fired equipment such as gas furnaces. A heat pump on its own does not burn fuel, but a hybrid system connects to your gas furnace, so any gas or venting work must be done by a TSSA-registered contractor. Heat pump rebates also require a program-registered contractor.

What is a hybrid heating system and what does it cost in Ontario?

A hybrid (dual-fuel) system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump heats in milder weather and the furnace takes over in deep cold. Cost varies with equipment size, controls and ductwork, so use our heat pump cost calculator and ask each company for an itemized quote. Rebates may reduce the cost of the heat pump.

How long does a furnace last, and when should I replace it?

Many furnaces last 15 to 20 years with regular maintenance. If yours is near that age and repairs are getting frequent or costly, replacement usually makes more sense than another repair. Our repair or replace quiz can help you decide.

What should an Ontario furnace quote include?

At minimum: the equipment model and efficiency rating, labour, any ductwork changes, venting and gas line work, permits and warranty terms. Get at least two written quotes so you can compare them.

Is it safe to sign a furnace or AC contract at my door?

Be very cautious. Ontario law restricts unsolicited door-to-door sales and contracts for furnaces and air conditioners, and a contract signed after an uninvited visit can be void. Do not sign on a first visit, do not pay the full amount upfront, and verify the company yourself.
