The formula is: (Furnace BTU/h ÷ AFUE) × Hours of Operation × Gas Rate per BTU. Our calculator does this math automatically. For example, a 100,000 BTU furnace at 95% AFUE running 8 hours/day at $0.38/m³ costs approximately $3.20/day to operate.
As of 2025, the most efficient residential gas furnaces reach 98–98.7% AFUE. Top models include the Lennox SLP99V, Carrier Infinity 98, and Trane XV95. These use variable-speed blowers and condensing technology to minimize fuel waste.
Common causes include: a dirty air filter, an oversized or undersized furnace short-cycling, air leaks in the ductwork, inadequate insulation, extreme cold snaps, or a declining furnace efficiency due to age. Our troubleshooting wizard can help diagnose the issue.
